Setting up your Permissions, Part 3.
Your Stuff
1. The last part of the permissions page is Your stuff and What’s New. Your stuff includes your Space, which of course you can’t set yet because you haven’t set one up at this point, your Photos, your Files and your Shared favourites. We can skip the Space one out, so just click on permissions under the Photos title and you will be taken to the Photos page and invited to create a Photo album.
2. If you then click on Create album you will be in the Create a photo album page, where you can give your album a name and choose who to share that photo album with, either Everyone, your Network, just yourself or individual people as before.
3. When you have decided who to share that Photo album with click on Next. You can add some photos right now to your album by choosing either Select photos from your computer, or Add from an existing album. If you want to leave it until later, then just click on Profile at the top of the page or your browser back button.
3. The next choice under the Your Stuff category is Files, and if you click on permissions you will be taken to your SkyDrive (the name means your ‘Drive’ in the Sky or your online place where you can store all of your stuff on Windows Live such as files, documents, photos etc.) You can choose here who has access to those files. You can see that under Documents you have two separate icons, one called Documents with a padlock on it, and the other called Public with a world icon on it. Whenever you see that world icon on any document folder, photo file etc, it indicates that you are sharing that folder with everyone. The padlock means that particular file is private and is only accessible by yourself. You can change this if you wish.
4. Click on the Documents file that has the padlock on it and then click on the blue Just me.
5. Now in the Permissions for Documents page, click on Edit permissions. You will now be in the familiar Edit permissions page where you can choose just who to share this particular folder with Everyone, your network, individual categories (which we will set up at a later date) and also individual people by inputting their e mail addresses in the box as before. Once you have finished just click on Save. NOTE. You cannot change the permissions for the public folder.
6. Shared Favourites. This choice is about any of your favourite websites that you have included via the Windows Live Toolbar and you can click the blue link in this option to download it to use in Internet Explorer. If you don’t want to use the Windows Live toolbar at this time, then you can set up individual favourite websites that you love to visit here as well.
7. To do that, just click on permissions to be taken to the Shared favourites page, then click on Create favourite. Now input the web address of your favourite site and also the name of the site. You can also give it a description if you like such as what type of content is usually found there, what its about etc, and then click on Create.
8. To change the permission for your favourite web sites, click on the current Shared with (in my case this is My Network) and then click on Edit permissions to be taken to the Edit permissions for Shared favourites page where again you can choose just who you want to have access to all of your favourite sites. When you have decided on who to share your favourite sites with, click on Save.
What’s New.
What’s new with you
9. Here you can choose which of your activities that you do on Windows Live will be sharable with other users. The people that you allow to see your Windows Live activities will then be able to view them via your Profile page. They will also see them on their Home page as updates in their What’s new with your Network. These updates can include when you upload some photos to your SkyDrive, publish a blog post to your Space, join in a discussion in a Group that you have joined, make a comment on someone else's Space or add anyone new to your network. So in order to alter those permissions click on Permissions. You will be taken to the Manage what’s new with you page. As you can see, all of the choices are ticked by default and there is quite a list that is sharable on Windows Live! If there is any area that you do NOT want to share with anyone, then just untick the box to the left of the choice by clicking inside it.
10. Once you are happy with your choices of what exactly you are prepared to show to others in your profile page and in their What’s new with your Network, then click on Save. Staying on this Manage what’s new with you page, you will see below the Save button,
Web Activities.
This area allows you to add other places that you visit whilst online that are not part of Windows Live. To access this, you will need to add some Web Activities to your profile and so we might as well do this whilst we are in this page.
11. Click on Add web activities to your profile at the bottom of the page. You will be taken to your web activities where you can add any other sites to your profile page that you frequently visit such as Facebook, Flickr, Digg, iLike, Twitter etc. For this how-to, I will add, Flickr, Twitter, and Facebook.
12. To add a web activity, just click on Add at the bottom of each one, and then Add Facebook. You will then be in the Add Facebook to your profile page, and it is in this page that you can set up exactly who you will share this Web Activity with. They will be able to see every update that you make to your wall on Facebook. As always you can choose to share with Everyone (public) your Network, just yourself or just certain people.
13. Once you have set up who you wish to share your activity on Facebook, then click on Add to add that activity to your profile page in your What’s new list. Continue to add any other websites that you frequently use and set up their permissions as you add them. NOTE. You will have to input your username in order to enable these web activities.
And that’s it! You have worked your way through setting up your permissions for Windows Live.
Next post we will add some people to our network using the search facility built into Windows Live.
