Recently I visited my eldest son in Alexandria. Scotland and whilst there I took lots of photographs of the fantastic scenery around the area where they live. I took lots of photos that were intended to be ‘stitched’ together into Panoramic views and I will post about those later.  For this post I will concentrate on the excellent editing facilities found in Windows Live Photo Gallery, beginning with the FIX feature.

Picture before fixing inside Windows Live Photo Gallery

Here is one of the photos that I took when we went for a walk in Balloch park.  As you can plainly see it is a little too dark because the day was so cloudy and it was late afternoon.  A lot of the detail is lost.  How to fix?  Well that is easy using Windows Live Photo Gallery!

Original settings of photo Firstly click on the FIX button. On the right hand side, you can now click on Auto Fix and you will be presented with lots of ‘slider bars’ to enable adjustments to be made to your photo.  I could just use the BRIGHTNESS slider for this photo but using that causes me to lose some of the cloud detail.  So instead I am going to adjust the ‘Shadow’ slider to the right. Now the detail in the picture can be seen and in fact I can actually adjust the ‘Brighten’ slider a little to the left. I also adjusted the ‘Highlights’ slider slightly to the right as well.

Now I have brightened up the Photo and allowed the tree detail to be seen without losing any cloud detail in the process!  Of course you can alter all of the sliders until you are satisfied with the results.  Once you are happy with the changes, just click on BACK TO GALLERY and your adjusted photograph will automatically be saved.

Photo now shows much better detail without losing the cloud detail

If you change your mind later or want to revert the photograph to its original state, then just load the photograph into Windows Live Photo Gallery, click on FIX, then  click on Auto Fix, and at the bottom of the Menu choices on the right hand side, you will see a small picture which says REVERT, so just click on that and your picture will then be altered back to its original state.

Experiment with your photos in Windows Live Photo Gallery and check what each adjustment alters in the photograph.  You can’t break anything and you will be able to alter all your photos that you weren’t entirely happy with.
