Even with the increased build quality and therefore reliability of modern Hard Drives, unforeseen circumstances such as fire, flood, theft or even complete drive failure can result in your important and precious information being lost.  Even if the data is never completely gone (through damage), it will be very difficult and expensive to get it back.

The solution: Backup to a separate drive.  Backing up regularly has never been easier now that Windows 7 has it’s own backup software included in the OS.  It’s automatic, so the only intervention from you will come when you set up the backup routine.  It’s really very simple to do.

Make sure you have a suitable location to back up to.  I’m using one of my other HDD’s (which used to have my XP installation on) as it meets the capacity requirements (at least 200Gb).

To format a drive, type ‘Disk’ into search and look for “Create and Format hard disk partitions”.  Find the right drive, make sure its the right drive, make sure you realise it will delete everything from it and click ‘format’.

Search for ‘Back up’ and open “Backup and Restore”.  Click ‘Back up now’.

You’ll then be asked to specify what you want to backup.  The process will then begin.

When it’s done, you can change the schedule to whenever you want, usually at the end of the week.
